9:30AM, WEDNESDAY 28 OCTOBER, MURAL HALL

Who: Dr Monique Ryan MP; Kate Chaney MP; Ms Rebekah Cassidy, Chief Executive Officer, AusBiotech; Associate Professor Julien Freitag, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer, Magellan Stem Cells Pty Limited.

What: Crossbench calls for scrutiny of Research and Development (R&D) tax incentive changes which put our medical research sector at risk.

Independent Federal Members for Kooyong and Curtin will shine a light on the Albanese Government's proposed changes to the Research and Development Tax Incentive (RDTI), which will restrict access to refundable tax offsets for medical research and biotechnology companies less than 15 years old.

It routinely takes more than 15 years to develop life-changing health and research discoveries through rigorous clinical trials, regulatory approvals, and commercialisation.

Parliamentarians will be joined by medical research leaders alarmed that the changes will create uncertainty for Australian companies making long-range decisions about where they should undertake clinical development programs.

There is significant fear in the sector that, as a result of the government's RDTI changes, innovative Australian companies will move offshore to countries with more friendly R&D policy settings.

Where: Mural Hall, Parliament House

When: 9:30am, Wednesday 28 October

Safety of all children must be prioritised in childcare settings

Media Release Safety of all children must be prioritised in childcare settings National Children’s Commissioner Deb Tsorbaris says reports of violence against babies and toddlers in early childhood care settings are deeply disturbing and unacceptable and demonstrate the urgent need for consistent child safety protections across Australia. While significant reforms have been introduced across the sector, serious safety and quality failures continue in some services, including those which fall outside the national quality framework. It is essential that all services are regulated and scrutinised by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority. National Children's Commissioner Deb Tsorbaris has called…

New ABS data shows Australian deaths from alcohol remain high, as advocates call for urgent government action

The number of Australians who died from alcohol-induced causes has risen to 1,829 people in 2025. Today, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released the latest data on Causes of Death in Australia. As reported by the ABS, men continue to die from alcohol-induced causes at a higher rate than women, with a death rate of 8.8 per 100,000 people compared with 3.4 for women. However, alcohol-induced deaths among women have increased, rising from 462 deaths in 2024 to 522 deaths in 2025, with the death rate increasing from 3.1 to 3.4 per 100,000 people. Medicare review risks locking out nurse practitioners, at odds with Government’s own workforce plan

Key Facts: The Australian College of Nursing (ACN) has warned that a major review of Medicare's primary care consultation items risks excluding nurse practitioners (NPs), despite proposing bulk-billing incentives for NP consultations for the first time. The proposed bulk-billing incentives would only apply to patients registered through MyMedicare, yet NP-led practices without a GP are currently ineligible to join the scheme, creating an inequitable barrier for NP and nurse-led practices. ACN argues that failing to incorporate NPs into Medicare's funding framework contradicts the Government's own Nurse Practitioner Workforce Plan, which commits to growing the NP workforce and removing barriers to…
