- Australian tech company Dallo has coined the term R-Commerce (Regulated Commerce) to describe the selling of goods or services in regulated industries such as healthcare, aged care, childcare, financial services, and construction.
- Dallo argues that R-Commerce represents a third distinct category of commerce alongside traditional business and e-commerce, one that technology has largely failed to simplify.
- The company's thesis is that regulated businesses require purpose-built technology centred around compliance realities, rather than generic business software adapted afterwards.
- Founded by Australian entrepreneur Kyle Hunt, Dallo is being developed as a platform to help entrepreneurs start and operate businesses in regulated industries without needing to become compliance specialists themselves.
- Dallo has launched a video campaign featuring a symbolic switch that transports viewers into different regulated industries, reflecting the company's broader message that technology could make regulated industries more accessible to entrepreneurs.
For years, aspiring entrepreneurs have largely been presented with two paths: build a traditional business or build an e-commerce business.
Dallo believes there is a third economy hiding in plain sight.
Regulated Commerce, or R-Commerce, describes the selling of goods or services in regulated industries.
That includes healthcare, childcare, aged care, disability support, pharmacy, financial services, construction and other regulated industries that require licensing or permits to enter.
Dallo isn't claiming to have created these industries. Its argument is that they collectively represent a distinct category of commerce that technology has largely failed to simplify.
The third path for entrepreneurs
E-commerce platforms transformed entrepreneurship by making something technically complicated accessible from a laptop.
Dallo believes R-Commerce presents a similar opportunity, except the problem isn't shopping carts, payments or shipping.
It's regulation.
Starting an online store and starting an aged-care provider are fundamentally different propositions.
A regulated operator may need to satisfy licensing and registration requirements before it can operate, then continue meeting regulatory obligations throughout the life of the business.
Documents change. Regulations change. Registrations expire. Staff requirements evolve. Evidence must be maintained. Audits happen.
The consequences of getting it wrong can also extend far beyond simply losing a sale.
Dallo's thesis is that these businesses require technology built specifically around the realities of regulated industries, rather than generic business software adapted afterwards.
For entrepreneurs, that creates a different way of looking at regulation.
Instead of asking only, "What business can I start?", Dallo wants entrepreneurs to consider:
"What industries exist where regulation creates the barrier to entry?"
The regulation isn't what makes these opportunities easy. It's precisely what makes them difficult to enter - and potentially harder to compete in once those barriers can be navigated.
Where Dallo comes in
Founded by Australian entrepreneur Kyle Hunt, Dallo is being built as a purpose-built R-Commerce platform designed to help entrepreneurs start, manage and grow businesses in regulated industries without first having to become specialists in compliance themselves.
Its focus is simplifying the processes between deciding to enter a regulated industry and actually being able to operate within it.
Rather than treating compliance as paperwork sitting outside the business, Dallo's proposition is to make regulatory requirements part of the digital infrastructure supporting it.
R-Commerce isn't about removing regulation. It's about making regulated commerce easier to understand, enter and operate within.
The switch
Dallo has turned that idea into a new video campaign built around one simple visual: a switch that opens the door to regulated industries.
In the film posted to Dallo's social media, Hunt discovers a Dallo switch in an ordinary corporate boardroom. Each press transports him into a different regulated industry - from construction to medicinal cannabis and aged care - before returning him to the boardroom.
The concept reflects Dallo's broader message:
The industries were always there. The opportunity is making them more accessible.
Healthcare, childcare, aged care, disability support, construction and financial services aren't new economies.
But the technology making it easier for entrepreneurs to participate in them could be.
Dallo believes that category has a name:
R-Commerce.
