ECOTONE helps restore North Sydney Olympic Pool’s Art Deco brickwork as original bricks are no longer made

ECOTONE Coatings < 1 min read

Sydney, 6 November 2026 - Australian coating systems specialist ECOTONE has played a key role in the restoration of North Sydney Olympic Pool, one of Sydney Harbour's most recognisable heritage landmarks.

During the restoration, several original concrete and brickwork structures had deteriorated and had to be replaced. The replacement bricks were structurally sound but did not match the pool's original Art Deco face brickwork, which is no longer manufactured.

Using its brick colouring service, ECOTONE blended the new brickwork with the original, preserving the site's heritage character while meeting today's building standards. ECOTONE worked alongside Urbis, Icon Construction and Brewster Hjorth Architects on the project.

“Replacing the brickwork to enable a seamless match involved ensuring the mismatched available brick was the same size and of similar texture, as well as laying the brickwork with the right mortar detail allowed our colours to be customised and applied to get the new to match the old. The result is a seamless restoration that honours the past while supporting the future," said Tony Watling of ECOTONE AUS & NZ.

Brick colour matching allows new or repaired brickwork to blend with existing walls without paint or demolition. ECOTONE's long-life stains bond with the brick leaving a natural brick look with the right colour.
