From refugee to Young Socceroo: soccer brings Braybrook students together

Settlement Services International (SSI) 3 mins read

Last week, two hundred students at Braybrook College, in one of Melbourne’s most culturally diverse communities, came together through soccer to explore how they can all help everyone feel they belong. They were joined by former Socceroos captain Craig Foster and former professional soccer player Kamal Ibrahim.

For Kamal Ibrahim, the day had particular significance. After fleeing conflict in Ethiopia, he arrived in Melbourne at the age of 11 speaking no English. Football became a way to connect with his new community, and he went on to become the first East African to represent Australia at under 20 level in football and play in the A-League.

Braybrook College has many students from migrant and refugee families, including some who have only recently arrived in Australia. Sport provides a simple and accessible way for students from different cultural and language backgrounds to participate and connect. Braybrook College Principal Kelly Panousieris and the school’s teachers dedicated the day to the link between student wellbeing and inclusion, reflecting the school's commitment to belonging.

The event was hosted by SSI and delivered by One Ball, the charity founded by Kamal Ibrahim to bring together young people from different cultures, backgrounds and beliefs through football. Students also heard from Craig Foster and local and state representatives. Simon Rodder, General Manager Community at Melbourne Victory Football Club, presented club jerseys to students who received scholarships.

Craig Foster, former Socceroo and Human Rights Advocate

“Football has a unique ability to bring people together across cultures, backgrounds, and generations. Seeing young people from such a diverse community come together through sport is a powerful reminder that inclusion starts with connection. Events like this help create a sense of belonging, build confidence, and show young people that their differences are something to be celebrated.”

Peter van Vliet, Chair of SSI

“Settlement is about much more than helping people find their feet in a new country. It is about creating the connections and sense of belonging that allow people to feel part of their community and build a future here. Bringing people together, whether through sport, education or community life, helps create the relationships that make our communities stronger and more connected.”

Mohamad Semra, Mayor of Maribyrnong

“Maribyrnong is one of Australia's most culturally diverse municipalities, and events like this showcase the strength that diversity brings to our community. By bringing students together through football, culture and shared experiences, we are creating opportunities for connection, understanding, and participation. It is wonderful to see local organisations, schools and community leaders working together to inspire the next generation.”

Sonia Vignjevic, SSI General Manager Strategic Partnerships & Sustainable Development and Victorian State Director

“There is something incredibly powerful about giving young people the space to come together, express themselves and imagine the Australia they want to be part of. Sport can open that door — breaking down barriers, creating connection and giving every young person a chance to be seen, heard and valued."

"This day was about more than taking part; it was an opportunity for young people to share their hopes for an Australia where everyone is treated with respect, everyone belongs and everyone is given an equal go. That sense of possibility — of young people finding their voice and knowing it matters — is at the heart of what we want SSI to stand for.”
