Allied Health Professionals Rally to Demand Fairness and Recognition

Health Services Union SA/NT 2 mins read

Allied Health professionals across South Australia are mobilising this week in a series of rallies and stop work actions, urging the State Government to honour its commitment to a standalone Allied Health Enterprise Agreement (EA).

The Health Services Union SA/NT (HSU SA/NT) is leading the charge, emphasising that this is a pivotal moment to secure long-overdue recognition and tailored conditions for the sector.

Currently, Allied Health workers are covered under the South Australian Public Sector Salaried Agreement, which does not adequately address the specific needs and roles of professionals such as physiotherapists, radiographers, social workers, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, dietitians, psychologists, pharmacists, and sonographers.

This lack of specialised recognition has led to calls for a separate EA that acknowledges the distinct value these professionals bring to the healthcare system.

Allied Health professionals have now been in negotiations with the State Government for more than nine months. Throughout this time, workers have shown patience and commitment, balancing their passion for delivering high-quality care with the need to advocate for fairer conditions. But this process cannot drag on indefinitely.

It’s time for the Government to conclude these negotiations with a fair and respectful agreement so that our members can get on with their lives and their work — without being forced to continue fighting for the basic recognition they deserve.

Quotes attributable to HSU SA/NT Branch Secretary Billy Elrick:

“We’ve been negotiating for over nine months — it’s time for the Government to deliver a fair deal so Allied Health professionals can get on with their lives.”

“These rallies are about securing real recognition through a dedicated agreement that reflects the essential work we do.”

“This is the largest coordinated action Allied Health professionals have ever taken — we’re standing together for fair pay and respect.”

“The HSU has ensured that critical services will not be disrupted, with skeleton crews remaining on site where required.”

MEU funds class action against BHP over public holiday breaches

The Mining and Energy Union (MEU) is funding a class action against BHP in pursuit of compensation for thousands of mineworkers employed by its labour hire subsidiaries Operations Services (Production and Maintenance), who were unlawfully required to work on public holidays. It follows a Federal Court ruling that Operations Services (OS) breached the National Employment Standards when rostering workers on Christmas Day and Boxing Day holidays at Daunia mine in Central Queensland in 2019. This MEU legal victory confirmed years of non-compliance with public holiday rights by the nation’s richest company. The class action could cover up to 7,000 workers…

HVO approval backs Hunter jobs and communities

The Mining and Energy Union has welcomed the NSW Independent Planning Commission’s approval of the Hunter Valley Operations Continuation Project, saying it gives more than 1,500 workers and their families greater certainty about their future. MEU Northern Mining and NSW Energy District President Robin Williams said workers had made a powerful case for what HVO means to them and the wider Hunter. “This is an enormous relief for HVO workers and their families. They stood up and told the Commission what these jobs mean to them, to local businesses and to towns across the Hunter,” Mr Williams said. “After a…
