The following can be attributable to Professor Reid:

“By teaching students about the impact of plastic pollution on ocean wildlife, schools can help cultivate a sense of connection, empathy and responsibility in young people.

“Schools should consider adopting a ‘whole school’ approach when promoting sustainability and reducing plastic waste. By engaging the entire school community in efforts to reduce plastic waste, schools can nurture a culture of dialogue about diverse aspects of sustainability, and how the school community promotes positive engagement, problem-solving and real action.

“Some innovative approaches that schools can use to teach students about ocean plastic pollution are the Plastic Free Schools project and the Sea Country program. These inclusive, creative and interactive approaches can help all students connect with the issue in meaningful ways and encourage them to become advocates for change.

“By teaching about this environmental issue in school subjects and via cross-curricular priorities, teachers can help students understand the interconnectedness of environmental problems. Climate change, habitat loss and pollution are all linked. Recognising this can inspire young people to think more broadly about environmental issues and take a more holistic approach to sustainability.”

Behaviour contracts won’t fix bullying crisis

Paper-trail solutions to the state’s bullying crisis won’t work and a new approach is needed, Youth Action NSW has warned. The peak body for the state’s youth says the plan to require parents and students to acknowledge new behaviour codes risks missing the deeper causes of bullying and places responsibility on families who have little control over what happens inside school grounds. The warning comes after a shocking incident at a south-west Sydney school in which a 13-year-old girl was allegedly punched, humiliated and taunted by other students during a five-hour ordeal that has horrified parents across the state. Youth…

Unions face economic reality check

Unions are on a collision course with reality with their latest workplace demands. The Australian Higher Education Industrial Association (AHEIA) made the comment in the context of its recent submissions to the Senate Select Committee on Productivity in Australia, which is scheduled to report at the end of September this year. The inquiry aims to identify structural barriers to productivity growth, which has been lagging in Australia in recent years. “AHEIA supports agreements that lead to fair and sustainable salary increases, underpinned by productivity improvements and has indicated that in its submission to the inquiry,” the Executive Director of the…
