Memorial Day Service to Remember Lives Lost to Coal Mining

Mining and Energy Union < 1 mins read

The Mining and Energy Union will hold its 28th Annual Memorial Day Service to remember lives lost to coal mining this Sunday 14 September.

The service is held to acknowledge the men, women and boys who have lost their lives in the Northern District Coalfields – with 1,793 names etched on the Jim Comerford Memorial Wall.

This year the name of Craig Hugo, who lost his life at Austar mine last September while undertaking site rehabilitation, was added to the wall.

The event will be attended by mineworkers and their families; MEU members, delegates and officials; mining industry representatives; local, state and federal political representatives; and loved ones of those workers whose names appear on the wall. It is open to everyone in the community.

MEU Northern Mining & NSW Energy District President Robin Williams said the annual Memorial Day Service is an important opportunity to come together and support bereaved families and friends of coal miners killed on the job.

“The way we mine coal is continually changing, but from the earliest days of the industry to the present it remains an industry where workers face considerable risks.

“Each name on the wall represents a devastating loss for a local family.

“As we come together at the Memorial Wall to share our grief and support each other, we remember these lives lost and recommit ourselves to ensuring no more names are added. We must always be vigilant and work together to protect mineworkers’ lives.”
