Tuesday 2 December 2025

A new film project, ‘Final Fight for the Bight: Legacy’, today releases a powerful spec trailer narrated by acclaimed Australian actor and surfer Simon Baker, shining a global spotlight on the Nullarbor and Great Australian Bight and calling for UNESCO World Heritage protection.

The trailer marks the public relaunch of a major campaign led by Surfers for Climate and the Great Australian Bight Alliance to secure permanent protection for one of Earth’s most biodiverse marine ecosystems, building on decades of community resistance.

The film follows Simon Baker and a diverse cast of surfers, scientists, artists, Indigenous elders and community voices as they journey across desert and sea country, revealing why the Bight is both a cultural heartland and a sanctuary of life, where around 85 percent of species are found nowhere else on the planet.

Centered on Mirning Country and 65,000 years of continuous stewardship, the documentary explores how ancient whale song traditions, sacred stories and contemporary conservation come together in a final push for World Heritage listing.

The trailer lands at a moment of growing political momentum, following recent meetings with the South Australian Premier and Environment Minister, and the South Australian Liberal Opposition’s commitment to support World Heritage for the region ahead of the 2026 state election.

The feature documentary is in production now and is planned for release in 2026, supported by an impact and education campaign across schools, communities and international audiences to keep the Bight at the forefront of Australia’s environmental story.

Australians and supporters around the world are invited to watch and share the new trailer and add their name to the petition calling for UNESCO World Heritage status and permanent protection for the Nullarbor and Great Australian Bight.
