Australia’s 2025 human rights heroes will be announced at the Australian Human Rights Awards in Sydney on Friday. The Awards honour individuals and organisations from across the country who work to improve people’s lives.

 

This year’s event features:

 

  • Announcement of the prestigious Human Rights Medal recipient, and awards for advancing human rights in the community, media, law and youth sectors. Former Human Rights Medal recipients include Fred Hollows, Peter Greste, Ian Thorpe, Jonathan Thurston and Professor Larissa Behrendt.

 

  • Human Rights Day Oration: Juliana Nkrumah AM, leading advocate for social justice and equality. She will share her insights and vision for equality and justice in Australia, in this 50th year of the Racial Discrimination Act.

 

  • MC: journalist and broadcaster Karla Grant.

Where: University of Technology Sydney, Great Hall, Broadway

 

This year’s Awards attracted more than 300 nominations, with 20 finalists representing a diverse range of contributions - from youth support workers and filmmakers to justice advocates and medical professionals.
