Monash expert: South Australia secures Australian MotoGP

Monash University < 1 mins read

The South Australian government has confirmed the Australian MotoGP will move to South Australia from 2027. The Victorian government has confirmed this year’s race will be the last held at Phillip Island. A Monash expert is available to talk about what this means for the industry.

Comments attributable to Dr Heenan:

“Revenge is sweet. In 1995, Victoria’s Kennett government stole the Grand Prix from Adelaide. After 31 years, the Malinauskas government has pinched the Phillip Island MotoGP from Victoria.

“With expectations of a global audience of 600 million and revenues of $200 million, Malinasukas has given MotoGP Sport Entertainment SL what they want: the street race experience.

“Last week, the major stakeholders met in Spain to plot a global strategy for the sport. Obviously, it didn’t include the remote, windswept Phillip Island circuit. Global sporting events bank on big city backdrops in up-market locations. Albert Park ‘chic’ fitted the brief but the Allen government wasn’t buying it. The Malinauskas government may well learn that revenge comes at a cost.”
