THE BRISBANE WOMAN WHO STEPPED OUT OF RETIREMENT AND INTO THE SPOTLIGHT - AND IS TAKING THOUSANDS OF WOMEN WITH HER

At 48, Ruma Mildwater is proving that the most powerful chapter is the one nobody saw coming

BRISBANE, QLD - Ruma Mildwater had every reason to stay comfortable. Then she decided to show up anyway - for her daughters, for the women in her life, and for every woman who has ever felt like the world stopped noticing her.

The Hamilton-based content creator and style influencer walked away from a previous chapter of her life and found herself, at 48, starting over. What followed was an unexpected reinvention - one she decided to document publicly, and in doing so, built a community of women who recognised themselves in her story.

Known on social media as Ruma Mildwater, her content is rooted in a clean, modern aesthetic - all black, minimal, considered - centred on skirts, tailored pieces, and the kind of style that comes from finally knowing who you are. She talks honestly about identity, confidence, and what it actually feels like to rebuild a life in your late 40s.

Her timing is hard to ignore. Women over 40 represent one of the wealthiest and most commercially influential demographics in the country - and one of the least reflected in mainstream media and social content. Ruma isn’t filling that gap as a strategy. She’s filling it because she lived it.

“At 48, I found myself a divorcee twice over, with two young daughters and completely lost. I had no idea who I was, what I liked, or even what to wear. There are only two photos of me with my youngest daughter from that time - I felt so unattractive I avoided the camera entirely. Then I had this crazy idea: what if I documented the journey back to myself? I’ve been awkward in front of the lens, refused to film reels for months, and the first time I spoke on camera I hated the sound of my own voice. I still do. But I keep going - because I want my daughters to see that we reach our best when things make us uncomfortable. At 48 I’ve discovered I have a passion for a black leather mini skirt. Who would have thought. I want to build a community that shows every woman that a life can be rebuilt at any age - from 18 to 88.”

With a combined following of more than 5,000 across Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, Ruma has grown a cross-platform audience that keeps coming back - not for polish, but for honesty. Her followers are real women at real crossroads: career changes, empty nests, fresh starts, and the decision to stop waiting for permission to take up space.

She is driven, she says, by two things: her daughters, who she hopes will grow up watching a woman walk toward the world rather than away from it - and the wider community of women who deserve to see their own lives reflected back at them.

With a structured content strategy underway and brand partnerships in development, 2026 is shaping up to be the year Ruma Mildwater becomes a name Queensland media gets to know.
