The United Services Union (USU) welcomes the decision to retain local beach lifeguard services in‑house at Coffs Harbour City Council, marking a significant win for public safety, community trust, and secure local jobs.
The outcome follows extensive consultation with lifeguards, community groups, and the USU, ensuring the voices of frontline workers and residents were central to the process.
The USU said the decision reflects the strong community support for publicly delivered safety services and the essential role professional lifeguards play in protecting beachgoers.
Acting Northern Industrial Officer Luke Hutchinson said the result demonstrates the power of collaboration and the value of quality public services.
“Lifeguards are highly trained professionals who bring unmatched local knowledge, experience, and commitment to the beaches they protect. Keeping the service in‑house ensures the community continues to benefit from a trusted, accountable, and high‑quality public safety service,” Mr Hutchinson said.
He acknowledged the constructive consultation process that led to the final decision.
