PERTH, Monday 4 May 2026 — Greenpeace Australia Pacific has welcomed the Federal Government’s investment in 10 Western Australian renewable energy projects and calls on the WA Cook Government to commit to an overdue WA Renewable Energy Target.
On 2 May 2026, Federal Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen, Assistant Climate and Energy Minister Josh Wilson and WA Minister for Energy and Decarbonisation Amber-Jade Sanderson announced support for 10 renewable energy projects in WA through the Albanese Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS). This increases the total number of CIS tenders in WA from four to a total 14 out of 79 across the country.
The investment is a much-needed boost for the lagging transition of WA’s economy away from insecure fossil fuels, but would be strengthened if the Cook Labor Government committed to a Renewable Energy Target and stopped pushing outdated, polluting gas projects like Woodside’s Browse.
Geoff Bice, WA Campaign Lead at Greenpeace Australia Pacific, said: “This commitment to accelerating the roll-out of renewable energy in WA by the Albanese and Cook Governments is an example of positive action for WA’s transition to cheap, clean, reliable energy and will support communities in the necessary shift from polluting fossil fuels.
“More than half a million WA households have taken the initiative to install rooftop solar, demonstrating strong popular support for renewable energy, and modelling shows that we have more than enough clean sun and wind to power the entire WA economy. Yet, WA is the only Labor government without a committed Renewable Energy Target.
“The investment of federal funding should give the WA Government greater confidence to commit to a strong Renewable Energy Target for the South West Interconnected System grid — an essential lever for achieving the phase out of coal and gas in WA.
“There is still more to be done. WA can become a renewable energy powerhouse with ongoing investment at a state and federal level in transmission, renewable energy projects and green commodities right across the state, not just the south west grid.
“Western Australian communities deserve decisive and timely action from the Cook and Albanese Governments to keep up with the inevitable and vital energy transition. Greenpeace will continue to advocate for clean, safe, affordable wind and solar energy for all Australians.”
