ICAC inquiry: Union members demand full transparency on school funding

14 August 2026 The union representing teachers and support staff in non-government schools in NSW and the ACT is deeply concerned by revelations that public funding for Catholic schools may have been wrongfully spent on Liberal party matters including branch stacking. The NSW Independent Commission against Corruption (ICAC) is investigating allegations that Catholic Schools NSW made illegal political donations to the NSW Liberal party at the behest of its chief executive Dallas McInerney, who has stood aside from his role. Higher Ed union ‘vacuum’

The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) is unable to fill the majority of its own committee roles in universities around Australia, creating a governance vacuum. The Australian Electoral Commission recently conducted elections for NTEU committee and other roles at higher education institutions. The NTEU needed to fill almost 220 positions on university-based committees, but could fill only 53. Many branch secretary and branch president roles are vacant. At some universities not one position attracted a nomination, including national…

Preschool funding cuts will hurt NSW families and children

The NSW Government’s elimination of long day care preschool program funding will drive up costs and reduce the quality of early learning for nearly two thirds of eligible children, Uniting NSW.ACT has warned. Uniting – together with some of NSW’s largest quality not-for-profit (NFP) preschool providers – strongly urges the NSW Government to abandon the $150 million cut that will hit families with children beginning preschool in 2027. Representatives from the NFP providers, including Uniting, met with the NSW Deputy Premier this week to make the case for children and families. “Nearly two thirds of families with children of preschool…
