Jobless rate highlights need for Working from Home bill rethink

Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry < 1 min read

Today’s unemployment data is further evidence of the need to reassess the Work From Home legislation, according to the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The bill may be debated and passed through the Victorian Parliament's Legislative Council as early as next week.

Victoria's unemployment, at 5.1 per cent, remains at the highest level nationally coupled with the highest levels of underemployment. Most concerningly Victoria's youth unemployment rate sits at an eye-watering 13.2 per cent in contrast with New South Wales's comparatively enviable 8.5 per cent.

Now is not the time to saddle Victorian employers with legislation that will make things even tougher.

Employers have choices, about where they set up a business, and in what state they hire staff.  If this flawed Bill passes, business will look elsewhere to set up shop, and Victoria will miss out on jobs, and any economic benefit.

To be attributed to Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Sally Curtain:

“As it stands, the proposed legislation remains a profound risk to our state's economy. Let’s not add to the significant economic challenges businesses and our young people already face in Victoria.”

“Withdrawing this legislation is critical to stop Victoria’s businesses from sliding backwards. We would be pleased to work with the Premier on positive initiatives to propel Victoria forward.”

“The business community has been united throughout; we are deeply concerned about the impact the mere prospect of this legislation is having on the Victorian economy”

Victoria one step closer to stamping out corruption

The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) have welcomed the appointment of Royal Commission and announcement of the Terms of Reference into crime and misconduct in Vitoria's construction industry. For too long allegations about crime and corruption on Victorian building sites have threatened the integrity of taxpayer funded infrastructure projects, fundamentally undermining public trust in the sector and the state's capital program. Last month, VCCI and ACCI came together to call for a Royal Commission in a bid to restore confidence and public trust in this vital industry along with…

CA ANZ welcomes reform package to strengthen consumer protections and financial advice

20 August 2026 Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) welcome the Australian Government's proposed consumer protection reforms, describing them as a significant response to weaknesses exposed across the superannuation, financial advice and investment sectors. The reforms follow the collapse of the Shield and First Guardian Master Funds, which affected almost 12,000 Australians and involved around $1 billion in retirement savings. CA ANZ Group Executive Advocacy, Public and Government Affairs, Damian Ogden, said the reforms were a necessary response to recent failures in the financial services system. "The Shield and First Guardian collapses demonstrate the devastating consequences when failures…
