Athol cowboy goes 3-for-3 for fifth win of 2026 as Walcha’s Tyson Smith flies the flag for NSW
The race for Australian bull riding’s most coveted buckle has just become a whole lot hotter.
Athol, Queensland cowboy Zane Hall is on fire, producing a perfect 3-for-3 performance to win the PBR Australia Hawkesbury Invitational last night and surge back into second place in the national standings, now just 111 points behind reigning Australian Champion, Mareeba’s Kurt Shephard. Hall finished the two-night battle with a 243.80-point aggregate, claiming his fifth event victory of the 2026 season and adding another 276 PBR Australia points to a campaign that has him breathing down Shephard’s neck as the charge towards the November Grand Finals in Townsville intensifies.
The official standings now have Shephard on 2,087 points, Hall on 1,976 and Brazil’s Keny Roger de Oliveira on 1,849.
It was a weekend that showed exactly why Hall has emerged as one of the most dangerous cowboys in Australian bull riding. He opened round one with 73.20 points aboard Gone Rogue, after declining a reride then turned up the heat on Saturday night with 85.50 points aboard Asmodeus, before sealing the Hawkesbury crown with 85.10 points aboard MSG Locating Filthy Rich in the Championship Round.
While a Queenslander took the win, NSW had plenty to celebrate on home-state dirt.
Walcha’s Tyson Smith finished runner-up with a 171.50-point aggregate, highlighted by the biggest ride of the entire weekend, a spectacular 86.90 points aboard Candy Paint in the Championship Round. Smith edged Brazilian star Keny Roger de Oliveira, who finished third on 170.70 after an impressive 86.80-point ride aboard BJ.
Smith’s Championship Round ride was a beauty, with Candy Paint marked 43.00 points and the Walcha cowboy matching him all the way to the whistle.
Fourth overall was Willow Tree’s Clint Glass, continuing a strong run of form for the NSW cowboy, while reigning Australian Champion Kurt Shephard finished fifth, but Shephard had already made his mark on Hawkesbury. The Mareeba cowboy claimed the Friday Night Bonus and $5,000, topping the opening round with an 85-point ride aboard Uppercut. Tyson Smith was second on Friday with 84.60, ahead of Rockhampton’s Caiden Sandilands on 83.80 and Oberon’s Jack Rowlandson on 83.40.
The bulls brought plenty of firepower of their own, with Sky High from Morgys Cattle Company earning Bull of the Weekend honours after being marked 43.10 points.
NSW YOUNG GUNS LIGHT UP HAWKESBURY
NSW’s next generation made sure the home-state celebrations started well before the big guns hit the dirt, with young BSW cowboys claiming three of the four Can-Am Junior Academy divisions.
Singleton’s Clay Thomas won the Pee Wee division with 66.00 points aboard Jerry, while Barraba’s Noah Lowe claimed the Juniors with a huge 71.30-point ride aboard Alcatraz.
Kootingal’s Colby Clark made it three NSW wins, taking out the Senior division with 75.20 points aboard Toolio, while Queensland struck back in Rising Stars, with Miriam Vale’s Rex Walker winning on Done Deal for 78.80 points.
THE GOLD BUCKLE RACE IS ON
Hall's Hawkesbury victory has transformed the battle at the top of the leaderboard. Shephard remains the man to catch on 2,087 points, but Hall has closed to within 111 points, while de Oliveira remains firmly in contention in third on 1,849.
