VCE exams are over – now what?

La Trobe University < 1 min read

What's the advice post VCE exams?

Two La Trobe University experts are available for post-exam discussion, the significant milestone of finishing school for students and parents, anxiety in the lead up to the ATAR release, the ATAR hype and career pathways.

Dr Kylie Murphy is a Senior Lecturer in Educational Psychology and Pedagogy at La Trobe University's School of Education.

Topic points:

  • The significant milestone of finishing school for students and their parents, regardless of the ATAR.
  • The "actual, limited meaning and purpose of ATAR, despite the hype"
  • The different reasons why people's ATAR might be lower than what is needed for a university course.
  • Where university is relevant to a desired career and where university may not be so helpful.
  • University is not just for school leavers - sometimes it's better to do other things first (work, TAFE, degree pathway courses, volunteering)
  • Importance of keeping the ATAR in perspective: "As students await their ATAR, it's wise to develop a contingency plan - for reassurance that whatever the ATAR is, it'll be OK."
