Blessing at Christ Church Cathedral ahead of the People’s Blockade

Rising Tide < 1 mins read

The Very Reverend Katherine Bowyer, Dean of Newcastle, will bless watercraft and environmental activists at Christ Church Cathedral on Monday November 20 at 11am.

The blessing will take place ahead of the People’s Blockade of the Port of Newcastle on November 25-26.

Dean Katherine said it was part of her Anglican faith to care for the environment.

“Whether you are a person of faith or not, this is about acknowledging we all have an overarching responsibility to care for the world and creation,” Dean Katherine said.

“What joins us together is a desire to care for the world well.”

Dean Katherine lived in the Upper Hunter 20 years ago, shortly after becoming a priest. During this time she said she saw the landscape change dramatically under the impact of coal mining.

“I recognise the economic importance of mining,” she said. “But I am also aware of the impact on the environment as we burn coal.

“We need to be proactive about moving to renewable sources of energy. If we say we are going to be good stewards of the earth, we can’t just stand by.

Dean Katherine will be available for an interview following the blessing. For further information contact:

Victorian Government gas exploration tenders put corporate profits over communities and climate

SYDNEY, Wednesday 10 December 2025 — Greenpeace Australia Pacific has slammed the Victorian government’s decision to press ahead with two new gas exploration license tenders, saying it “flies in the face of science and community opposition”. The Allan government today has opened two new tenders for gas exploration in Gippsland and offshore at the Otway Basin, ignoring overwhelming community concerns and opening the floodgates to more fossil fuel pollution. The announcement comes as the Federal government prepares to announce its proposed pathway forward on the Gas Market Review. Solaye Snider, Campaigner at Greenpeace Australia Pacific, said: “The Victorian government’s decision…

KU-RING-GAI COUNCIL FINED FOR WATER POLLUTION INCIDENT

Ku-ring-gai Council has been issued a $30,000 Penalty Infringement Notice after a leachate leak from a legacy landfill beneath the North Turramurra Golf Course in July 2025. The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) was made aware of the incident on 10 July, when council reported that a pump used to manage leachate from the old landfill failed allowing contaminated water to enter a nearby unnamed creek. EPA Executive Director Operations Steve Beaman said Council was fortunate the incident didn’t escalate further. “The risk here for the surrounding environment was very high and real as the creek flows towards Ku-ring-gai Chase…
