The House hosts My First Speech winners
The winners of the My First Speech competition will be visiting Canberra next week to have their say. The competition asks students to imagine themselves as a newly elected Member of the House of Representatives. They are tasked with writing a 90 second speech about issues they are passionate about, just like a new Member of the House of Representatives. The judges for the 2024 competition were the Speaker of the House, the Hon Milton Dick MP, Member for Longman, Mr Terry Young MP and Member for Curtin, Ms Kate Chaney MP. A fair go for Landcare Facilitators
November 1, 2024 Landcare Victoria Inc, the peak body for Landcare in Victoria, has launched an advocacy campaign calling on the State Government to invest $48 million into the Victorian Landcare Facilitator Program (VLFP) over the next four years. Launching the campaign this week, Landcare Victoria Inc. Chair Jane Carney said that without longer-term and greater funding, the future of the VLFP is at risk. “Critical to the success of Landcare are our 80 local facilitators and 10 regional coordinators who harness the power of tens of thousands of volunteers across more than 600 Victorian Landcare groups,” Mrs Carney said.…

Australian Muslim Artists Art Prize 2024 announced
Rosalind Noor’s oil painting, The Sovereign has been awarded this year’s Australian Muslim Artists Art Prize. The work emerged in the aftermath of the referendum on an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament and explores themes of Indigenous sovereignty and post-coloniality. Inspired byFarid al-Din Attar’s poem The Conference of the Birds, The Sovereign is filled with an abundance of symbolic references for the viewer to unpack. Noor has skilfully woven Australian flora and fauna together with references to 15th-16th century Persian and Mughal miniature paintings.
