Manufacturing Division Welcomes CFMEU Split Vote

The CFMEU Manufacturing Division welcomes the announcement from Minister Tony Burke that the Government will provide the opportunity for members to vote on their future.

Manufacturing Division Members will now have the chance to determine if they want their union to be outside of the CFMEU.

Minister Burke is 100% right in his assessment that the status quo in the CFMEU is dysfunctional and cannot continue.

CFMEU Manufacturing National Secretary Mr Michael O’Connor said:

“We welcome this, the government is doing the right thing, they have listened to us and are respecting the good judgment of our members”

“Our members; who work in floorcovering, cabinetry and joinery, glass and glazing, installation and shopfitting, timber and wood products, pulp and paper, furniture, textile, clothing and footwear and building products and materials manufacturing- deserve the right to decide how they want to be represented by their union.

“This government has a good track record of backing workers’ rights and this is no exception”

“We will now move to ensure a vote of our members on this question can occur as a matter of priority”

“We will be encouraging every member to vote in the secret ballot and ensure they are fully informed of the benefits to them from the Manufacturing Division becoming independent of the CFMEU.”

The Manufacturing Division made an application to the Fair Work Commission over two years ago to put the demerger question to rank and file Manufacturing Division members and, following CFMEU Construction Division efforts to block the vote from occurring, has supported a Private Members Bill Senator Jacqui Lambie introduced to parliament earlier this year which would facilitate a vote.

Last year the Mining and Energy Union was allowed a vote on whether to leave the CFMEU and 98% of members voted in their thousands to leave.

“Our members will now get the same opportunity as mining and energy workers got last year, to determine the future of their union”

“We thank Senator Lambie and Minister Burke who are backing us in to give our members an opportunity for a brighter future outside of the CFMEU and a more respected and active role in the labour movement, free from the shackles of the dysfunctional CFMEU” concluded Mr O’Connor.

Transparency on specialist fees is a welcome and necessary reform

Catholic Health Australia has welcomed new legislation introduced today to improve the transparency of specialist doctor fees as health costs continue to soar. The new legislation will allow the Government to upload specialist cost data directly to the Medical Costs Finder, an online tool that helps patients understand costs for specialist services. The Medical Costs Finder is already operating, but its impact has been limited because participation by individual specialists has been voluntary and extremely low, meaning patients often cannot see what a specific doctor actually charges. The new legislation allowing the Government to upload data directly to the Medical…

National survey finds high levels of stress and overwork among university staff

A shocking new report shows Australia’s universities are living a tale of two workplaces where senior leaders say they experience relatively low levels of psychological risk while staff at every university in the study are working in conditions that put them at high risk of psychological harm. The findings, released today as part of the 2025 Australian University Census on StaffWellbeing, lay bare the deep disconnect between management and frontline staff at institutions which educate more than a million students and employ hundreds of thousands. National Assistant Secretary of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) Gabe Gooding said the alarming…

Health funds back stronger transparency laws for specialist doctor fees

Private Healthcare Australia has welcomed the Federal Government’s legislation to upgrade the Medical Costs Finder website, saying it is a critical step toward tackling Australia’s growing specialist fee crisis. The reform will expand the information available about specialist doctors’ fees, allowing patients to compare typical costs before booking an appointment and better estimate their likely out-of-pocket expenses. The move comes after PHA last week released its report, Restoring affordable access to specialist care in Australia, backed by a nationally representative survey of more than 4,000 Australians. The report revealed an urgent affordability and access problem reshaping Australia’s health system. It…
