CDU Free Tax Clinic a finalist for prestigious award

Charles Darwin University 2 mins read

Charles Darwin University’s (CDU) Free Tax Clinic has been named one of five finalists for Shaping Australia’s 2025 Community Champion Award.

The prestigious award recognises an individual, team, or university with deep ties to the community, with judges looking for entries that showcase tangible improvements in the lives of locals, lasting impact, and genuine connection.

More than 2,500 Territorians have received free help to fill in tax returns and receive tax advice, including individuals, small businesses and not-for-profits, with a strong focus on supporting low-income earners, and those unfamiliar with Australia’s tax system.

CDU Senior Lecturer in Auditing and Assurance and the Clinic’s Program Director, Raul David, said he was “over the moon” to see his team’s efforts recognised.

“It’s an incredible honour for our students, staff, and partners, who dedicate their time and expertise to helping Territorians navigate the tax system with dignity and confidence,” Mr David said.

“It recognises not just our service, but our shared belief that access to financial help should never depend on where you live or how much you earn.”

The category winners will be announced on February 25, 2026, with people’s choice voting closing on January 19.

Anyone can vote for the Clinic here.

“The CDU Free Tax Clinic is proof that practical learning can change lives – our accounting students work alongside professionals and academics to deliver free tax assistance to people experiencing financial hardship, domestic and financial abuse, homelessness, and language barriers, often in some of the most remote parts of the Northern Territory,” Mr David said.

“Being a finalist for this award shines a light on the team’s compassion and professionalism. We hope Territorians will vote for us because every vote is a vote for fairness, inclusion, and community service.

“The more awareness we raise, the more people we can reach – from remote Indigenous communities to migrant workers finding their footing in Australia’s financial system.”

New Australian study shows devastating impact of coerced business debt

A pioneering national study, conducted by a Monash University expert in collaboration with consumer advocates, has shed light on the hidden toll of coerced business debt, revealing how business structures are being weaponised to perpetrate financial abuse, resulting in long-term economic hardship. The study – led by Associate Professor Vivien Chen of Monash Business School and Jasmine Opdam, Senior Policy and Advocacy Officer at Redfern Legal Centre’s Financial Abuse Service NSW, and conducted in collaboration with the Economic Abuse Reference Group – is the first national study of its kind. It highlights how women in heterosexual relationships are disproportionately the…
