AnNIVERSARY OF THE australian army training team’s entry into Vietnam
Today we recognise those who served in the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV), the first Australians to respond to a request for assistance from the Republic of Vietnam.
61 years ago, 30 AATTV advisers arrived in Saigon to provide training support to the Republic of Vietnam.
These advisers worked across the country, often working alone or in pairs alongside American advisory teams and Republic of Vietnam Units.
Throughout the Vietnam War, the Team often found themselves engaged in fierce combat and became the most highly decorated Australian unit to serve in the war.
Four AATTV members were awarded the Victoria Cross, and the Team received numerous other awards and decorations including a US presidential unit citation.
The unit’s numbers peaked at more than 220 members in 1971, as they worked to support Republic of Vietnam Units on patrol and helping defend bases from attack, demonstrating military and counter insurgency skills in the heat of battle.
In the latter part of the war, the AATTV’s role focused on training in preparation for a possible withdrawal of the allies.
Today, we say thank you to those who served in the AATTV and honour all those who served our nation during the Vietnam War.
Throughout 2023, the Australian Government is recognising the contribution of our Vietnam veterans, their service in Vietnam and their role as integral members of the ex-service community in the decades since the war.
On Vietnam Veterans’ Day, 18 August 2023, a national commemorative service will be held in Canberra to recognise the 50th anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War.
