Monash Expert: Senior government ministers retiring and cabinet reshuffle

Monash University < 1 min read

Two senior members of the government, Linda Burney, the Minister for Indigenous Australians and Skills and Training Minister Brendan O'Connor, have announced their plans to retire at the end of this term of government. Both will step down from their positions as ministers immediately, with the Prime Minister expected to announce his new ministry on Sunday. A Monash expert is available to discuss what this cabinet reshuffle means in the lead up to next year’s election.

The following can be attributed to Dr Ghazarian:

“The resignations of two high profile ministers, Linda Burney and Brendan O'Connor, indicates the government is snapping into election mode. Cabinet reshuffles are often used to inject new talent into the ministry, but can also rejuvenate the government's policy agenda.

“Polls have suggested that the Albanese Government has struggled to attract masses of new support. The window for the next election is opening, so this reshuffle may be an opportunity to allow the Prime Minister to be back on the front foot in the political debate.”

R&D Groundhog Day as Government’s ‘Ambitious Australia’ plan mirrors report released 18 years ago.

A nation’s commitment to research, developmentand innovation is a signifier of itscommitmenttoits citizens’future.Regrettably, Australia’s once proudtrack recordon R&Dhas been falling by the wayside for decades. Last week, ourpoor performancewasagainhighlighted by “Ambitious Australia”,the final report of the Strategic Examination of Research and Development Panelheaded byRobyn Denholmandreleased by Minister for Industry and Innovation Tim Ayres. The lack of support for science and industry in recent decades is reflected in the fact that theproblems and solutionsidentifiedin this reportbear a striking resemblance tothose of asimilar reviewreleasedby the Rudd Government in 2008 – the “Venturous Australia” report. The report also confirms that Australia’s investment in R&D has…

25 March 2026 Mount Alexander Shire Council in Victoria has unanimously passed a motion calling on the Federal Government to establish a National Climate Compensation Fund, funded through a levy on major coal, oil and gas corporations, to cover the soaring costs of worsening climate disasters being borne by local councils and communities across Australia.
