Carbon-offset gas launches in Victoria and New South Wales

Energy Locals 3 mins read

A fair gas deal to challenge the market is live

Energy Locals is excited to launch its new gas service in Victoria and New South Wales, bringing both existing and new customers an affordable option for their gas needs. In addition to great prices, Energy Locals is also carbon offsetting all their customer's usage as standards/ This move is set to challenge the market and offer consumers a fairer alternative with a trusted provider.

“Energy Locals was founded to disrupt the energy industry, challenge the big players, and make energy fairer for Australian households and businesses,” says Adrian Merrick, Energy Locals founder.”

“With more than 75% of Australian households’ gas tied to the big three providers*, it's clear that increased competition is essential to protect consumers from being charged more than they need to."

“In recent months, we’ve seen gas prices skyrocket from retailers who are simultaneously posting record profits. This is happening during a cost-of-living crisis, and it simply isn’t right.”

Merrick continues, "Choosing a gas provider is often seen as a 'set and forget' decision, but what many don't realise is that loyalty isn't always rewarded. While other providers might offer competitive prices to attract new customers, they often fail to keep prices low for those who stay."

"So if you've been with your gas provider for a while, there's a good chance you could save by switching to Energy Locals."

“Other providers often also don’t carbon offset their customer’s usage, or expect them to pay an additional premium. We’re offsetting 100% of our customers' gas usage as standard, eliminating the carbon footprint of their gas consumption.”

Listening to customer demand

As the 2024 and 2023 Finder Green Energy Retailer of the Year, Energy Locals carefully considered their decision to include gas in their service offering. Ultimately, with gas here to stay for the foreseeable future, the feedback from loyal customers was clear: they wanted the convenience of managing both electricity and gas with a single provider they trust.

“While we recognise that gas isn’t the long-term solution we aspire to, the reality is that it remains an important part of many households' energy needs for now,” says Merrick.

“Our customers have told us that they are looking for more than just convenience—they want to support a provider whose values align with their own. They’re tired of dealing with and giving their money to providers who may also be playing a part in sustaining high energy prices, which are hurting households and businesses.”

“We acknowledge the environmental limitations of gas, but it’s a reality for now. So, while it is, we’re going to make it work our way, with the right motivations.”

How Energy Locals is making gas fairer for consumers:

“Carbon Offsetting: We’re offsetting 100% of our customers' gas usage, eliminating the carbon footprint of their gas consumption.”

“Use Gas to Invest in Cleaner Alternatives: Energy Locals recognises gas as a short-term solution and is dedicated to reinvesting in cleaner alternatives and transitioning away from fossil fuels.”

“Honesty and transparency: Just like our electricity, there’s no sneaky lock-in contracts or pesky exit fees, and prices only change once every year to ensure predictability and fairness.”

“Local support: If customers ever need assistance, they can rely on award-winning support from the Energy Locals team based in Melbourne.”

With this new offering, Energy Locals continues its mission to provide Australians with fair, transparent, and sustainable energy solutions they can trust.
