US election media experts

La Trobe University 2 mins read

As Kamala Harris and Donald Trump prepare for the US presidential debate today, La Trobe University experts are available for commentary on the election race.

Professor Dennis Altman AM

Vice-Chancellor's Fellow and Emeritus Professor of Politics. Professor Altman has written 15 books exploring sexuality, politics and their inter-relationship in Australia, the United States and globally. A former visiting Professor of Australian Studies at Harvard, he has written broadly on US politics, including the current election.

Professor Altman can discuss:

  • Is Trump likely to be re-elected? And which party will control Congress after the election?

  • If the election is close, will that lead to claims of fraud and vote rigging? If so, will there be more violence as there was in 2021?

  • What are the consequences of the next President for US policy towards Israel/Gaza and Ukraine?

The following can be attributed to Professor Altman:

“If Trump is re-elected, this will give fodder to right-wing forces globally — and may well hand Vladimir Putin a victory over Ukraine.

If Harris is elected, she will struggle to implement most of her domestic policies unless the Democrats also win control of both houses of Congress, which looks unlikely.

“All we can predict with certainty is a fairly messy and divisive future for the US, which will probably reduce US influence globally.”

Professor Nick Bisley

Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences and Professor of International Relations. His research and teaching expertise is in Asia's international relations, great power politics and Australia's foreign and defence policy.

Professor Bisley can discuss the following topics:

  • US politics in relation to Australian foreign, defence and economic security policy.

The following can be attributed to Professor Bisley:

“This election will be of immense consequence to the rest of the world.

“Trump is promising massive tariffs that will disrupt world trade, threats to friends and foes alike and the distinct chance that Washington will retreat from the world.

“Harris is untried on the global stage and while promising continuity she shares the protectionist instinct of her opponent and is likely to continue a cautious downscaling of America’s global role.”
