Australia needs a national plan to get off imported oil for good, not just a call to conserve it, Rewiring Australia said today.
“Our country runs on someone else’s oil even though we’re one of the best locations in the world to generate cheap electricity,” said Rewiring Australia CEO Francis Vierboom.
“More than four million homes already have rooftop solar and EV sales are surging. Australians can see where this is heading. They just need a national plan to get there faster.”
Rewiring Australia is calling on the government to introduce a National Electrification Plan and end billions of dollars in fuel tax credits that subsidise diesel use by heavy industry.
“We're asking families to save fuel while subsidising some of the biggest diesel users in the country,” Mr Vierboom said.
“That money could be helping households and businesses get off fossil fuels for good.”
Rewiring Australia modelling shows a fully electrified household with solar, a battery and an electric vehicle can cut energy bills by up to $4,100 a year.
“That's thousands of dollars back in people's pockets, and no exposure to global oil shocks,” Mr Vierboom said.
“We have the technology, the sunshine, and the will of the people who have wasted no time electrifying as this crisis has deepened. Now we just need a proper plan.”
