TALENT AVAILABLE: State of Climate Report 2024 shows no time to waste
Thursday 31 October: CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology have today released the State of the Climate Report 2024, which shows Australians are living with the dire consequences of increasing climate pollution caused by the burning of coal, oil and gas. The report highlights an increase of extreme fire seasons, extreme heat events, intense heavy rainfall and sea level rise, exacerbating pressures on the health and wellbeing of Australians and ecosystems. Alarmingly, scientists found the oceans around Australia are continuing to warm, with increases in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere leading to more acidic oceans, particularly south of Australia, contributing…

Momentous reform will improve access to quality health care
The introduction of laws to remove outdated ‘collaborative arrangements’, which take effect from tomorrow 1 November, will allow Nurse Practitioners and Endorsed Midwives to autonomously provide Medicare services and prescribe Pharmaceutical Benefits Schedule (PBS) medications. This is a big win for nurses and midwives who, since 2010, have had a legal requirement to have collaborative arrangements with a medical practitioner for them to be able to provide these services. It is also a big win for patients who will now have better, quicker, and more affordable access to important care and treatments. ACN CEO, Adjunct Professor Kathryn Zeitz FACN, said…

95% cut to emissions from Orica Kooragang Island
Emissions from one of Orica Kooragang Island’s largest emitting towers are set to reduce by 95 per cent, following the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) requiring the company to make significant improvements. Orica has switched on their new pollution controls at their Newcastle plant and as a result PM2.5 emissions (particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less) are expected to drop. The reduction in these very small particulates being emitted from their Prill Tower will be complemented by the EPA imposing more stringent emissions limits on their environment protection licence. NSW EPA Director Operations, David Gathercole said improving…

Scientists say plastic rubbish on beaches can now be seen from space
Aussie researchers have developed a new method for spotting plastic rubbish on our beaches and successfully field tested it on a remote stretch of coastline. The satellite imagery tool developed by RMIT University scientists picks up differences in how sand, water and plastics reflect light, allowing plastics to be spotted on shorelines from more than 600km above. Satellite technology is already used to track the massive amounts of plastic floating around our oceans – from relatively small drifts containing thousands of plastic bottles, bags and fishing nets, up to gigantic floating trash islands like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which…
