Harbison Burradoo receives largest Federal Government grant

Harbison Burradoo’s Stage 2 construction will commence in 2025 following the receipt of a Federal Government grant of $27.5 million – the largest grant in the latest funding round.

“We are thankful and grateful for the grant, which will allow us to achieve the next stage of our vision for improving how people age in the Southern Highlands and Illawarra Shoalhaven,” said David Cochran, Chief Executive Officer of Harbison.

“We will commence work next year on a new and modern 72 bed residential aged care facility and dementia respite service to replace the old hostel which was built in the 1950s and has been closed since 2023.

“This project will create far more than 50 full-time equivalent local skilled jobs, improve access to well-organised healthcare, and address the critical shortage of residential aged care in our super ageing community,” said Mr Cochran.

Harbison has operated in the Southern Highlands for over 60 years. Stage 1 of the masterplan, a new residential dementia care service, was opened by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales, in 2020, and won the Excellence in Aged Care award from the Urban Development Institute of Australia NSW in 2021.

“Stage 2 is the next step in a 10-year plan known as Harbison 2034 to meet the needs of older people and people living with dementia, and support healthy, productive, longer lives,” said Mr Cochran.

The funding is from the December round of the Aged Care Capital Assistance Program (ACCAP) which provided $250 million in funding for 52 projects to improve regional, rural and remote aged care facilities.

Member for Whitlam, Stephen Jones MP today presented the Federal Government’s $27.5 million grant, and in doing so echoed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that older Australians have access to safe and quality aged care services, no matter where they choose to live.

National Tertiary Education Union

New international student ministerial direction must not threaten jobs

The National Tertiary Education Union has called for a guarantee there will be no higher education job losses resulting from a new ministerial direction on international student visa applications. Ministerial direction 111, which comes into effect today, will effectively mean a slow-down of visa processing once an institution reaches 80 per cent of its international student allocation. The new scheme replaces ministerial direction 107, which slowed visa processing for smaller universities and students from countries considered to be higher risks of breaching visa conditions. NTEU National President Dr Alison Barnes said: “While this change is welcome for regional and smaller…

La Trobe welcomes new student visa processing scheme

La Trobe University Vice-Chancellor Professor Theo Farrell says the Federal Government’s decision to revoke Ministerial Direction 107 (MD107) will bring certainty to Australian universities and enable the equitable processing of international students, particularly for smaller universities and those in outer metro and regional areas. “We have always believed MD107 was an inequitable tool that unfairly advantaged the already very large metropolitan universities while devastating others, causing financial losses that have required the hard-hit universities to cut staff, courses and services to Australian students,” Professor Farrell said. “We are delighted the Federal Government has listened and acknowledged that MD107 unevenly impacted…

Homelessness Australia

MYEFO missed opportunity to fight housing crisis

Homelessness Australia has warned more ambition is needed to tackle the housing crisis after the federal government’s mid-year budget fell short in critical areas. The latest official data shows 109,557 people sought help from homelessness services in 2023/24 needing long term housing; with just 4,937 provided with the home they need. Meanwhile, rising cost of living and rental stress have left almost three million Australians at risk of homelessness, with services overwhelmed by soaring demand. The Federal Government’s Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO), released on Wednesday, contained no new investments in social housing or homelessness services. Homelessness Australia CEO…
