Australia’s premier annual GP conference to examine the future of general practice care

Royal Australian College of GPs 2 mins read

New technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), innovations in medicine, and research that can shape the way GPs care for communities across Australia will be examined at GP24 in Perth next week.

The Royal Australia College of GPs (RACGP) annual conference GP24 runs from 21 to 23 November at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, covering the latest in medical advancements, research, and clinical practice. GPs will also attend pre-conference workshops, including for emergency medicine, dermatology and cultural safety.

This year’s theme ‘Reimagining healthcare’ explores the future of general practice care in Australia.

Day one of GP24 includes the RACGP’s annual general meeting, which will see current President Dr Nicole Higgins handing over the reins to President-elect Dr Michael Wright.

And the conference closes with a Fellowship ceremony, which marks the culmination of 11 years’ education, training, rigorous assessment, and experience in primary care to become a specialist GP.

Keynote presentations will be delivered by leading experts in digital health, medical innovation, general practice, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, including:

  • Dr Jordan Nguyen, a leading Australian engineer, inventor and innovator who designs life-changing technologies to transform the lives of people with disabilities and the elderly.

  • Dr Jenny Brockis, a former GP who established a successful group practice in Perth, and best-selling author of five books, including The natural advantage.

  • Dr John Buckley, a GP in Brisbane, with nearly 28 years' experience in medical education and rural training.

  • Prof Helen Milroy, a Palyku woman whose homelands are in the Pilbara region of WA, and Australia’s first Indigenous doctor and child psychiatrist.

  • Dr Amandeep Hansra, a GP and one of Australia's leading digital health and innovation experts, who is currently the Australian Digital Health Agency's Chief Clinical Adviser, and co-deputy chair of the RACGP's Special Interest Group in Digital Health.

Interviews are available with keynote speakers and RACGP spokespeople, including:

  • RACGP President Dr Nicole Higgins

  • RACGP President-elect Dr Michael Wright

  • RACGP WA Chair Dr Ramya Raman

Universal Health Coverage Day: RACGP calls out need for better funding for chronic conditions and preventive care

Specialist GPs have marked International Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day by joining the World Health Organization in highlighting the devastating impact of health costs. The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) has stressed that a public health system which forces patients with complex or chronic conditions to pay out of pocket for longer consultations can’t claim to offer universal coverage, and urged governments to protect patients from financial hardship. “Health is a human right,” RACGP President Dr Michael Wright said. “Australia recognises the right of everyone to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, and our governments are…
