It takes a village (and some Aunties & Uncles) – celebrating 50 years of extending families
They say it takes a village (and some Aunties and Uncles) to raise a child, an adage that rings true for more than 5000 children, who have been mentored through Wesley Mission’s Aunties & Uncles program, celebrating 50 years of extending families.
Created in in 1974, Wesley Mission Aunties & Uncles Program Manager, Michelle Parrish, says it offers children from disadvantaged homes an extra family environment.
“Children spend one day or weekend with their Aunty or Uncle each month, participating in a range of activities, as well as everyday life experiences, that build their confidence and life skills.”
Aunties and Uncles (mentors) come from all walks of life. There are couples who have their own children still living at home, empty nesters, childfree couples and singles.
Parrish says once linked, the children, Aunties and/or Uncles, are supported by a case manager. After being linked for three years, they celebrate the graduation of the link as a successful extended family relationship and the case manager steps aside.
“From here, we encourage them to continue and more often than not, they do. We have many children that are now well and truly adults, that remain in touch with their Aunties and Uncles.” (see Taylor’s story attached and view the below link).
