The Salvation Army in Gladstone is working with the local Anglican Church to take on responsibility for their food distribution service, which was at risk of closing. The current service at 25 Tank Street will be rebranded as “Booth’s Food Kingdom” and responsibility for its operation with move to The Salvation Army from Monday 2 December.
“This important service provides affordable food and grocery options to locals battling with the current cost-of-living crisis. The Salvation Army is pleased that we’ve been able to work with the local Anglican Church to take on this service. Booth’s Food Kingdom will work in conjunction with our current services to ensure that Gladstone locals who are experiencing food insecurity continue to have an affordable way of putting food on their tables,” Gladstone Corps Officer Captain Kay Ford said.
The creation of Booth’s Food Kingdom will allow The Salvation Army to build on the Anglican Church’s mission to support the community. Both groups recognised that this service is vital to the community and after fruitful discussions, a decision was made for The Salvation Army to take on the service, allowing people to continue to access affordable groceries.
“In the current economic climate, with cost-of-living pressures increasing, it is vital that community service providers work together to ensure support is maximised and overheads and red tape are minimised,” said Reverend Jennifer Hercott, Registrar at Anglican Diocese of Rockhampton. “The Salvation Army has the full support of the Anglican Church as we take on this vital service in our community and we ask that the community continue to support the food centre. We’re committed to working together to ensure the needs of Gladstone community continue to be met into the future.”
Locals are encouraged to pop into Booth’s Food Kingdom from Monday 2 December at 25 Tank Street, Gladstone.
