MEDIA RELEASE

27 August 2024

Event: 25th anniversary of Australian service in TImor-LESTE remembered

This year marks twenty-five years since Australian peacekeepers deployed as part of International Force East Timor (INTERFET), and led by Australia’s General Sir Peter Cosgrove, AK, CVO, MC, it remains Australia's largest peacekeeping mission to date, and Australia’s largest overseas military deployment since the Vietnam War.

Australia has a long history of service spanning from the Second World War until today. In what is now Timor-Leste, this included and continues to include Australian Defence Force, Australian Federal Police, as well as civilians.

We remember all those who served and pay tribute to the six Australians who tragically lost their lives while deployed, or as a result of their service.

To commemorate this anniversary, we will honour the service and sacrifice of veterans and their families with a National Commemorative Service commencing at 9:30am on Friday 20 September at the Australian Peacekeeping Memorial on Anzac Parade, Canberra.

To register, or learn more about the commemorative service visit the DVA website. DVA encourages all attendees to register their intent to attend to ensure adequate arrangements can be put in place.
