NSW court diversion program for alcohol and other drugs use lowers rates of reoffending and imprisonment, new study finds
Defendants in NSW who complete a 12-week voluntary treatment program for alcohol and other drugs (AOD) use are much less likely to reoffend or receive a prison sentence, a landmark evaluation shows. The findings, published in the International Journal of Drug Policy, provide strong evidence to support the pre-plea Magistrates Early Referral into Treatment (MERIT) program for adults facing charges in the NSW Local Court. “This study is proof that MERIT is effective in reducing the short-term risk of reoffending, imprisonment, and death in offenders who have issues with alcohol and other drug use,” said lead author Professor Donald Weatherburn,…

Hunter community members turned up in force last weekend, showing their support for people impacted by dementia whilst getting active to improve their brain health.
