You can’t go forwards on nature by going backwards on climate.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEWEDNESDAY 29 OCTOBER, 2025 You can’t go forwards on nature by going backwards on climate. With the Coalition still questioning Australia’s commitment to net zero, any deal between theAlbanese Government and the Coalition on national environment law reform is likely to be a disaster for the climate, the Climate Council warns. New research from the Climate Council shows that abandoning net zero and Australia’s other climate targets, as advocated by members of the Federal Coalition, could unleash 6.3 billion tonnes of climate pollution, and aligns with 3°C of global heating. The analysis finds under this 3ºC scenario, Australia…

Removing court discretion in South Australia harms vulnerable young people and fails to keep the community safe
The South Australian Government’s proposed reforms under the Young Offenders Plan — including removing court discretion in sentencing and introducing a presumption against bail for some young offenders — risk pushing more children deeper into cycles of incarceration. Justice Reform Initiative Executive Director Dr Mindy Sotiri said plans to bypass court discretion is a policy misstep that will entrench disadvantage and patterns of reoffending. “If our goal as a community is fewer children committing crime, the answer is not to remove judicial discretion and double-down on an approach that drives re-offending,” she said. “The research is very clear that the…

Politicians who vote to make it easier for doctors to kill patients via euthanasia can expect Family First to preference against them at next year’s state election. Family First’s Victorian upper house candidates Bernie Finn and Jane Foreman have condemned the Allan Government’s latest moves to make it easier for vulnerable people to be wrongfully killed via lethal injection along with Liberal leader Brad Battin’s support for it. “Allowing doctors to suggest euthanasia to patients fundamentally changes the doctor–patient relationship,” Mr Finn said. “No one should underestimate the power of a doctor’s suggestion. When a person is sick, frightened or…
