We need evidence-based health policy on drug use in the ACT – not political games
Media Release 21st October 2025 We need evidence-based health policy on drug use in the ACT - not political games Today’s failed attempt by the ACT Liberals to overturn recent changes to drug laws in the ACT flies in the face of sensible evidence-based policy and is completely out of step with the community’s views on drug laws. "We’re glad that sensible health policy continues in the ACT in the face of harmful political games,” Alice Salomon Uniting NSW.ACT’s Head of Advocacy said. “Many of the claims made today by the Liberal Opposition in the ACT Legislative Assembly about recent…

‘We’re here to help’: WA GPs urge patients to reach out and improve their health and wellbeing
Western Australian GPs are encouraging patients to book an appointment with their regular doctor to discuss ways to quit smoking or nicotine vaping and make positive lifestyle changes - including improving diet, increasing physical activity, and reducing alcohol or drug use. The call comes following concerning reports that 76% of the state’s adults are “above a healthy weight”, only 5% meet the recommended daily intake of five serves of vegetables, and smoking rates have risen for the first time since 1995. The same report found that 12% of adults admitted to using illicit drugs while 35% drank alcohol at harmful levels. …

Brainwave study sheds light on cause of ‘hearing voices’
A study of the way people process inner and outer speech is the first tangible evidence of a key theory about schizophrenia’s drivers. A new study led by psychologists from UNSW Sydney has provided the strongest evidence yet that auditory verbal hallucinations – or hearing voices – in schizophrenia may stem from a disruption in the brain’s ability to recognise its own inner voice. In a paper published today in the journal Schizophrenia Bulletin, the researchers say the finding could also be an important step towards finding biological indicators that point to the presence of schizophrenia. This is significant as…

ACT the first to introduce nation-leading alcohol delivery laws
Community groups and survivor-advocates have welcomed the ACT Government’s tabling today of its Liquor Amendment Bill 2025. The Bill updates the ACT’s Liquor Act to provide important safety measures that will reduce harm to women and children. This is a critical moment in Australia’s progress in addressing the crisis of family, domestic and sexual violence. Liquor laws across the nation still fail to properly regulate today’s online retail delivery environment, and the evidence shows this is fuelling and exacerbating family and domestic violence. Updates to the legal requirements are long overdue. The ACT Government’s move follows the commitment that all…

Victoria’s Great Outdoors Plan falls short on nature protection
"It's deeply disappointing andamissedopportunity for nature, Victoria's publicly owned bushland and the communities who cherish it,"saidVNPA Executive Director Matt Ruchel. Conservationists warn the lack of protection leaves these public forests vulnerable to destruction from logging and mining operations. To protect nature in national parks, logging, mining and major infrastructure development are banned. But they remain permissible in unprotected public land such as state forests. "The end of native forest logging presented a once-in-a-generation opportunity to safeguard millions of hectares of public land for wildlife and people. Instead, we've been handed a collection of small projects that don't add up to…
