The Alliance for Gambling Reform strongly supports the motion to be put to the Tasmanian Parliament that would ban gambling advertising and sponsorship across all state-owned or state-funded venues. The motion is a joint initiative by Independent Member for Nelson, Meg Webb and Independent Member for Clark, Kristie Johnston MP. The motion to be tabled in the Upper House this week would also include any gambling logos on players’ uniforms, consistent with recommendations made by a 2023 Federal parliamentary inquiry into online gambling and its harmful impacts. Further win in Slater and Gordon Strip Search Class Action in NSW Supreme Court: State backs down on proposal for thousands of trials

In the NSW Supreme Court last Friday, the State of NSW proposed orders which could have resulted in up to 10,000 potential members of the class action being required to run their own individual proceedings. Slater and Gordon Senior Associate, Class Actions, William Zerno said: “It is extraordinary that after losing the class action and now foreshadowing an appeal from the judgment, the State considered it appropriate to propose a process by which thousands of group members in this proceeding would potentially run their own individual claims to access compensation. “Given the class is estimated to be somewhere between 5,000…

Poker machines ‘saturate’ communities with high Indigenous populations, new research shows – Cape York Institute and Alliance condemn deliberate targeting of first nation’s people by the gambling industry

Indigenous communities across Australia are being targeted by the gambling industry meaning that while access to good quality essential services like healthcare and education is scarce, there is an oversupply of poker machines. Research by The Australia Institute has found that areas of Australia with higher Indigenous populations have 50% more poker machines than other areas. In local government areas where 10% of residents or more identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander there is one poker machine for every 99 people — compared to one for every 148 people in other areas. People in these areas also lose more…

Ironing Out: cleaning the grid for green iron and exports

Australia has a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to build a green export industry powered by clean energy. New research by Baringa Partners, commissioned by the Clean Energy Investor Group, identifies a clear pathway for how Australia can grow its electricity grid to support production of green iron and other green export products at scale. The modelling demonstrates that additional demand for clean electricity can be supplied without breaking the grid and will uplift ambition for domestic decarbonisation. Key points: Australia’s abundant renewable energy potential could be used to build a green iron export industry estimated to be worth around $100 billion…

ANMF welcomes expansion of Medicare bulk-billing

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) has welcomed the Albanese Government’s expansion of Medicare bulk-billing incentives – improving access to affordable healthcare for all Australians. From 1 November, bulk-billing incentives will be paid to GPs for every eligible Medicare patient they bulk-bill for services, as part of the new Bulk Billing Practice Incentive Program (BBPIP). Previously, the incentives were limited to children under 16 and concession card holders. ANMF Federal Secretary Annie Butler said the expansion of Medicare incentives would allow more people in the community to access timely, affordable healthcare. “We commend the Government on its commitment to…

Union Demands Urgent Action After Another Vicious Prison Assault

The Public Service Association (PSA), representing South Australian Correctional Officers, has condemned yet another violent assault in one of the state’s prisons - this time at Yatala Labour Prison - saying chronic under-resourcing, dangerously low pay, and collapsing morale have left the system at breaking point. At around 11am this morning, a brutal attack occurred inside Yatala’s Mirnu Unit - a unit originally designed for prisoner rehabilitation programs. Nine prisoners reportedly attacked a single inmate in a sustained assault that continued even after the victim lost consciousness. Responding officers intervened immediately and were forced to physically restrain the attackers after…
