The KIDS Foundation has released a moving Video News Release (VNR) capturing highlights from the opening of The Guardian of Change exhibition, held Tuesday night at 161 Collins Street. A standout moment was a stunning live performance by Awheata, a survivor from the Exford Bus Crash, who sangShallow to a captivated audience. Despite having no formal training, Awheata’s voice moved the room, and thanks to the Foundation, she’s now receiving singing lessons and regularly attends Injury Recovery Camps. The VNR also features reflections from: Hamish McLachlan, KIDS Foundation Ambassador Caitrin Kelly, Chair of the MRC Foundation Tony McEvoy, leading trainer…

UC announces casual professional staff underpayments

The University of Canberra has disclosed $1.5 million in underpayments relating to casual professional staff over the last six years, as well as an investigation into potential casual academic underpayment. Quotes attributable to NTEU ACT Division Secretary Dr Lachlan Clohesy: “This is disappointing news. Professional staff are the staff who keep the University running and deserve to be paid correctly for the work that they do. "Where casualisation occurs, wage theft often follows. This is why it's so important to prioritisejobsecurity. “These issues are historic, but should never have happened. We’ll work constructively with the University to make sure that…

A pilot program, led by Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network, saw over 25 nurses deliver chronic disease management and preventative healthcare across 18 general practices in Wagga Wagga and surrounding areas from October 2024 to May 2025. The Primary Health Network has been commissioned to run the strategy again, with 28 practices set to take part. e61 Institute comments on record-low fertility numbers released today

New ABS statistics released today show Australia’s fertility rate has reached a record low of 1.48, well below the replacement rate of 2.1. Dr Pelin Akyol, Research Manager at the e61 Institute, who has authored several research papers on fertility, said: “Australia’s declining fertility rate is driven by three factors: later parenthood, parents having fewer children, and rising share of people without children. The most significant of those is parents having fewer children, leading to smaller average family size. “Concerns about the cost of raising children and job security have consistently ranked as the most important factors for both men…

NTEU members launch strike action at ACU over woeful pay offer

National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) members at Australian Catholic University will launch strike action on Thursday. Union members will stop work for two hours in the morning after rejecting ACU management's offer of a 2.5 per cent annual pay rise – well below the wage price index of 3.4 per cent. Along with a fair pay rise, NTEU members are also fighting for strengthened job security, workload regulation and stronger rights to flexible work. ACU has campuses in Ballarat, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. NTEU General Secretary Dr Damien Cahill said: "ACU management's woefully inadequate offer has left NTEU members…
