Western Mineworkers’ Alliance calls for fair treatment as BHP announces Yandi mine wind-down

The WesternMineworkers' Alliance (WMWA) has been advised that BHP is proceeding with the wind-down of operations at its Yandi mine site in the Pilbara, as the ore body nears depletion. The company has begun informing its workforce, approximately 650 direct employees and 200 contractors, that operations will be scaled back over the next year before ceasing altogether. WMWA, representing more than 100 members at Yandi, said the announcement would come as a major blow to workers, their families, and the surrounding communities that have long supported the site. “This is a deeply unsettling time for hundreds of hardworking people who’ve…

Let’s get this done: it’s time to help 3.3 million Aussies and swiftly pass payday super laws

With payday super laws set for debate in Parliament this week, the Super Members Council urges all Parliamentarians to pass them swiftly to tackle unpaid super – which costs Australian workers $5.7 billion a year. Payday super laws were first promised two and a half years ago. Parliament must pass the laws promptly to meet the 1 July 2026 start date – any delay would cost workers a staggering $110 million a week in unpaid retirement savings. SMC has championed payday super laws as a key reform to help stamp out unpaid super, coupled with more proactive recovery of unpaid…

“MISSED OPPORTUNITY”: PEAK BODY GIVES VERDICT ON NSW GOVERNMENT RESPONSE TO THE NSW DRUG SUMMIT REPORT

28 October 2025 The Network of Alcohol and other Drugs Agencies (NADA) gave its verdict on the NSW Government response to the NSW Drug Summit Report, which was released this morning. NADA CEO Dr Robert Stirling said the NSW Government needs to urgently unlock funds to address the backlog of long waitlists and growing demand at alcohol and other drug (AOD) services across the state. “Today’s response from the NSW Government is a missed opportunity,” said Dr Stirling. “Between the Drug Summit under this government and the Special Commission under the last one, we’ve had two chances in the past…

AVONDALE GROUND AND SURFACE WATER SAMPLING

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) will be sampling groundwater and surface water on properties East of the Huntley Waste Emplacement, known as the Huntley Landfill, at Avondale next week after testing found leachate could be leaving the site. This follows preliminary surface water sampling conducted by the EPA in September which found elevated levels of ammonia and PFAS in Heritage and Mullet creeks. EPA Officers will be doorknocking neighbours downstream of the landfill, along the upper reaches of Mullet Creek, in Avondale this week to offer opt-in sampling of groundwater bores and creeks. Samples will be tested at a…
