Health and life at risk: Australia’s climate future

Australiaʼs peak body on climate and health is warning the Australian Government itʼs time to get serious on climate action, in response to the release of the first National Climate Risk Assessment. The report outlines that Australiaʼs health and social support system is already experiencing ‘moderate-to-highʼ risks due to climate change, with these risks escalating to ‘severeʼ within 25 years. Under the scenario of 3C of warming above pre-industrial times modelled in the report, “The health risks are untenableˮ said CAHAʼs Vice President and practising general practitioner, Dr Catherine Pendrey. “Weʼre facing increases in heat-related mortality of 450% in Sydney…

GREENPEACE: Weak climate target prioritises fossil fuel profits over safety of our communities

SYDNEY, Thursday 18 September 2025— Greenpeace Australia Pacific has branded the Albanese government’s new 2035 climate target as weak, dangerous and drastically short of what’s needed to meet the urgency of the climate crisis, exposing communities across Australia and the Pacific to worsening climate disasters. Responding to today’s announcement, Greenpeace said the Australian Government’s new climate plan is not science-aligned, and undermines global action under the Paris Agreement to limit warming to 1.5C — the line in the sand for averting the most severe and irreversible climate impacts. Greenpeace also states the government’s climate plan is not credible without a…

Weak emissions target puts people with the least at greatest risk

The Federal Government’s 2035 emissions reduction target of 62-70% is a failure of leadership that will expose Australia’s most vulnerable communities to escalating climate risks. ACOSS and the community sector called for a science-based and fair share emissions reduction target of net zero (100%) by 2035, 75% would have been an absolute minimum. “The weak target announced today by the Albanese Government falls dangerously short of what the science requires and what is possible,” ACOSS CEO Dr Cassandra Goldie said. “Without greater action, we will face more heatwaves, more floods, a higher cost of living, and deeper inequality. “The Federal…

BCCC calls for greater clarity on basic bank accounts

Many Australians may be paying more than they need to for basic banking services, according to the Banking Code Compliance Committee’s (BCCC) latest report, Back to Basics. The report reviewed how banks deliver on their commitments to offer fair and affordable banking services, with a focus on basic, low or no fee accounts for people with low or no income. Chair of the BCCC, Ian Govey AM, emphasised the importance of basic accounts. "These accounts play a crucial role in financial inclusion, but they must be visible, accessible and compliant with the Code," Mr Govey said. The BCCC found that…

Essential Services Commission

Business caught using falsified photos as evidence of energy efficiency upgrades

The Essential Services Commission has placed a six-month restriction on MYOM Australia’s Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) accreditation, alleging it used falsified photo evidence for its energy efficiency projects. The VEU program is an energy efficiency program, designed to help Victorians cut their energy bills and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Accredited businesses undertake energy efficiency upgrades that entitle them to create certificates, which they can then sell. The commission investigated 180 of MYOM’s VEU energy efficiency activities after receiving a tip-off from the community about potential misconduct. The investigation identified that the same lights appeared in photos submitted by MYOM as…

‘Bestie Tax’ Bites: avoiding the money chat is costing Aussies an all-time tab of over $1,600

Australians are quietly footing the bill for shared expenses with their nearest and dearest, with new research from PayPal revealing that Aussies estimate they are currently owed $423 on average, by friends, family, partners and colleagues who haven’t paid back their share. Two-thirds of Australians (67%) admit they’ve avoided asking to be repaid because it felt too awkward. In fact, 71% say chasing repayments makes them feel uncomfortable, a behaviour that is fuelling what’s been dubbed the hidden ‘Bestie Tax’ - the silent cost of sparing friends’ feelings at the expense of their own wallets. When it comes to repayment,…
