CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS ANZ OUTLINES COMPREHENSIVE RECOMMENDATIONS TO SUPPORT PRODUCTIVITY IN AUSTRALIA

Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) has submitted detailed recommendations to the Productivity Commission (PC) on four of its five interim reports which underscore the profession’s commitment to working collaboratively with the PC and the government to build a stronger, fairer economic future. CA ANZ has used its submission as an opportunity to outline its support for the modernisation of Australia’s tax system but to also explain the refinements that are needed to key proposals put forward by the PC on corporate tax. “CA ANZ agrees that tax reform is needed to ensure our economy is strong and…

Monash expert: Moderate to severe MS and pregnancy

A Monash University-led study published in JAMA Network Open was the first to examine the impact of pregnancy on multiple sclerosis (MS) relapse activity and long-term disability progression in women with moderate to severe disability. Most previous research has focused on women with mild MS-related disability. Similar to findings in women with minimal disability, MS relapse rates decrease during pregnancy and increase in the first three months postpartum in women with more significant MS disability. Pregnancy does not worsen long-term disability outcomes in this population. Available to comment: Dr Jessica Shipley, Monash Department of Neuroscience, School of Translational MedicineContact: +61…

Sydney Water’s new boss brings opportunity for cultural reset

The appointment of Sydney Water’s new boss presents a long-overdue opportunity to reset workplace culture and rebuild confidence in the public utility, the Australian Services Union said. Hunter Water Managing Director Darren Cleary has been announced as the new Manager Director of Sydney Water, following the departure of former boss Roch Cheroux earlier this year. Under Cheroux’s tenure, Sydney Water has seen rampant outsourcing, repeated attacks on workers’ rights, and a workplace culture pushed to the brink. ASU NSW & ACT Secretary Angus McFarland welcomed Cleary’s appointment. “A new leader at Sydney Water provides a chance to reset priorities: improve…

Super tax settings short-changing 1.2 million low paid workers around $500 million this year, report finds

A new report by the Super Members Council (SMC) has found 1.2 million workers will miss out on around $500 million in retirement savings this year due to out-of-date tax settings, leaving some workers with up to $60,000 less by retirement. The report finds that the Low Income Super Tax Offset (LISTO) – a fairness measure designed to top up the super of lower-income workers – has stayed frozen for 13 years and fallen behind changes to tax brackets and super contribution rates. As a result, 1.2 million workers will miss out on around $500 million in super tax concessions…

Hundreds of children in desperate need of a safe home: ACT Foster Carers Week

Hundreds of children in desperate need of a safe home Barnardos Australia is urging residents of the ACT to consider becoming foster carers as both are facing a critical shortage of foster carers. Hundreds of homes are urgently needed to meet demand for thousands of children currently in out-of-home care across the state. The shortage is having devastating real-world consequences for some of the state’s most vulnerable children, with many forced into emergency placements in hotels and motels with rotating staff rather than stable, nurturing family environments. “There is a clear and pressing shortfall of foster carers in the ACT,”…
