Native mammals ‘taking back’ Australia’s desert ecosystems from the cats

The ambitious trial to reintroduce native marsupial species into Sturt National Park is on track, say Wild Deserts conservationists. Western quolls, bilbies and golden bandicoots are slowly taking back a ‘low-cat’ area of the desert – the massive Wild Training Zone of more than 100km2 in Sturt National Park in NSW. The resurgence of these species is a result of the ‘beyond the fence’ initiative in Sturt National Park that is part of the Wild Deserts Partnership Project. It involves an alliance between UNSW Sydney's Wild Deserts team, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Taronga Conservation Society Australia.…

Reserve price law risks driving up housing costs, warns Family First

Family First has warned that the Victorian Government’s proposal to force public disclosure of auction reserve prices risks pushing up housing costs and reducing transparency, leaving young families worse off. Under the plan, real estate agents would be required to publish the reserve price at least seven days before an auction or fixed-date sale. Family First Upper House candidate Jane Foreman said the reform sounds attractive on paper but ignores how the market actually behaves. “We support honesty in the housing market — but this policy will just push more homes off-market, reduce transparency, and drive prices up for families,”…

Super Members Council

Don’t hand CSLR bill to 12 million low- and middle-income Australians

The Super Members Council says the Government should not hand the bill for the Compensation Scheme of Last Resort to 12 million low- and middle-income Australians. The CSLR was createdto compensate victims of financial misconduct as a last resort after all other options to recover money had been exhausted. A key design principle was that the parts of the financial services system from which the consumer harms had arisen would bear that cost. It would be a clear breach of that principle to force millions of everyday Australians who are members of highly regulated profit-to-member super funds to pay into…
