Songstress Ngaiire performing with Queensland Symphony Orchestra
for one incredible night at The Princess Theatre
as part of Open Season – Friday, 4 August!
She has been described by Rolling Stone as “a near perfect slice of hushed future soul”, and has shared the stage with ground-breakers of sound including Sufjan Stevens, Alicia Keys, Flume, Nai Palm of Hiatus Kaiyote and Leon Bridges, and now celebrated cross-genre and First Nations Papua New Guinean singer songwriter Ngaiire will perform live with Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) in one night of musical wonder under the baton of Benjamin Northey.
Sydney-based Ngaiire’s sound melds electronic neo-soul, gospel, and big pop sounds, strained through her unique lens, her musical career crosses genres and mediums and expectations. Her innovative approach has garnered her four ARIA award nominations, four National Live Music Awards, three FBi Radio SMAC Awards, and the inaugural Australian Women in Music Award for Artistic Excellence.
On Friday 4 August, the two will pair at The Princess Theatre for this rare performance, as part of Open Season - a curated program of music and art running across The Princess Theatre and The Tivoli during winter. Open Season is supported through Arts Queensland, the Live Music Australia Fund and the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund – initiatives of the Australian Government.
The show has been arranged by exciting young composer/creator, Alex Turley who has recently worked on diverse musical projects with the Sydney and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras, Genesis Owusu, Rüfüs Du Sol, Electric Fields, Sangam and Ripple Effect. He won the position of 2022 Young Composer-in-Residence with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, through which three pieces for orchestra were commissioned: Lungs (2021), an exploration of breath in music; Animalia (2022), a companion suite to Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals; and River (2023).
The performance is another in QSO’s extraordinary line-up of collaborations, which has seen the company play alongside incredible artists such as Birds of Tokyo, Missy Higgins, Ben Folds, Megan Washington, Horror Show, Thundamentals and Kite String Tangle.
The work was first commissioned by the Sydney Opera House for their 50th Anniversary celebration.
