TOP DOGS: Most popular and unusual dog names revealed

Bupa Pet Insurance has today unleashed its most popular pet dog names of the past year and while classic names rank the highest, some pet parents are looking to designer fashion labels, Hollywood, food and even their favourite tipple for inspiration.

Luna reached for the sky to become the most popular dog name, followed by Daisy and Milo.

The top 10 list, based on dogs named on Bupa Pet Insurance policies, proves dogs really are their owners’ fur children with names such as Charlie, Teddy and Frankie.

For the more unusual dog names, designer fashion labels for ‘pawsh’ dogs were the go-to inspiration, including Gucci, Chanel, and Chloe, while others looked to movie characters such as Yoda, Thor, Tinkerbell, Woody, Buzz, SNOOP and Jax from Sons of Anarchy.

Some even named their pooches after their favourite drink such as Bundy, Whiskey, Brandy and Bubbles while others went with their gut instinct naming their pooches Bagel, Chilli, Oreo, Biscuit and Peanut.

Confirming we are sports-mad nation, a special dog was named after Brazilian-Portuguese footballer PEPE while some dogs are an ode to late NBA champion basketballer Kobe Bryant.

Bupa General Insurance General Manager Shannon Orbons said: “Just like some children’s names, some pet names can divide popular opinion. Perhaps that’s why classic names continue to top the list, though the trend for more unique dog names continues to grow.

So, if you’re in your local off-leash park and you call out ‘Luna’ or ‘Daisy’, and some other friendly neighbourhood dogs run up to you, you’ll now know why.”

Mr Orbons said pet ownership continued to grow, and with ongoing cost of living challenges, many owners had pet insurance for peace of mind coverage.

“You can see by the some of the most popular names, that families see their pets as their children, and that’s why they’re also looking after their health and wellbeing,” he said.

“Vet bills can be expensive, and our members are seeing benefits from an average of $366 to more than $10,000.”
