Australian Red Cross is set to receive a critical investment of $2million from the Australian Government that aims to proactively address the impacts of El Niño in the Pacific region and Timor-Leste.
Anticipating severe drought conditions and increased cyclone activity, Australian Red Cross will be able to ensure local Red Cross Societies across the Pacific and Timor-Leste, have access to the resources they need so that communities are equipped to face the forecasted challenges.
Australian Red Cross Head of International Programs Adrian Prouse said the grant is a flexible and demand-driven initiative that will help Red Cross across the Pacific and Timor-Leste continue supporting local communities who are at the greatest risk of climate induced disasters.
“Amid the global challenges of climate change, the grant serves as a step towards strengthening resilience in a region particularly vulnerable to climate related hazards,” said Mr Prouse.
“This assistance means our local Red Cross partners can scale up their humanitarian efforts to address the unique humanitarian needs of communities affected by El Niño related weather events.”
This funding is testament to Australia's and the Red Cross’ commitment to supporting first responders and preparing communities for disasters and predicted adverse climate related events.
The funding will cover disaster preparedness, early action and response activities which are proven approaches to preventing loss of life and livelihoods while emphasising the pivotal role local teams in the region play in preparing and supporting communities for disasters.
