Clima and Sydney Showground Launch "Climate Conscious Events" Initiative

Sydney, Monday 1st July, 2024 – Clima, a leader in Net Zero Solutions is proud to announce a groundbreaking partnership with Sydney Showground to launch the "Climate Conscious Events" initiative. This innovative program is designed to help event organizers hosting events within the Sydney Showground Precinct to understand, reduce, and compensate for the environmental impact of their events, setting a new standard of environmental excellence in the industry.

Since hosting the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Sydney Showground has evolved into one of Australia’s premier venue and event businesses, boasting over 20 diverse venues, including the ENGIE Stadium. With over 1.5 million visitors annually attending more than 150 events, Sydney Showground recognizes its significant role in shaping the future of the events and venues industry in support of the global mission to achieve Net-Zero.

The events industry is responsible for over 10% of global carbon emissions, making it a major contributor to climate change. Sydney Showground, along with event organizers globally, aims to host sustainable events but often faces the challenge of accurately assessing their environmental impact. The fast-paced nature of the industry and the involvement of multiple stakeholders make it challenging to identify and collect the necessary data for a precise assessment.

"Our goal was to help Sydney Showground provide a solution to their clients to understand and track the environmental impact of their individual events," said Giulio D’Andrea, CEO of Clima. "Together, we created the ‘Climate Conscious Events’ initiative, giving Sydney Showground clients the tools to assess the environmental impact of their events, actively implement reduction strategies, and offset for emissions."

The "Climate Conscious Events" initiative offers a comprehensive approach:

  • Assessment: Provides clients with the ability to accurately measure the environmental impact of their event under the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

  • Reduction: Implement effective strategies to reduce carbon emissions.

  • Compensate: Offers options to offset any remaining emissions, ensuring events are as sustainable as possible.

Sydney Showground's commitment to sustainability is clear, and this initiative sets a new benchmark for environmental responsibility in the events industry. By partnering with Clima, Sydney Showground is not only addressing the immediate challenges of carbon emissions but also inspiring other venues and event organizers to pursue meaningful action.

"We are excited to collaborate with Clima on this crucial initiative," said Darryl Jeffrey, General Manager of Sydney Showground. "The ‘Climate Conscious Events’ program underscores our commitment to sustainability and our dedication to leading the events industry towards a greener future."

Where are all the sawfish?

Australia is home to some of the last significant populations ofsawfish on the planet. We need your help to find out how many are left. In December 2023, the world’s five sawfish species were reassessed as ‘critically endangered’ on the IUCN Red List. Four of the five species –Freshwater sawfish, Narrow sawfish, Dwarf sawfish and Green sawfish – are found in north Australian waters, but ‘proof of life’ is limited to isolated pockets in Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. During National Sawfish Sighting Week 2024 (26 October – 2 November), citizen scientists are needed to help spot these…

Australia’s biggest banks ranked on climate credentials: new analysis puts Macquarie last

MACQUARIE BANK has ranked last when it comes to a new benchmark that analyses the climate strategies of Australia’s five biggest banks. Out of a score of 100, Macquarie received just 50.19, ANZ was only slightly above (50.85) and next in line were NAB (58.1), CommBank (57.86) and Westpac (61.85). While Westpac received the top spot, serious concerns remain on its oil and gas policy and across all banks there is a growing gap with climate promises and meaningful climate action. The report’s key findings: All major banks still lack clear policies to end support for new oil and gas…
