MEDIA ALERT: ‘Leap forward’ in detecting, measuring and locating Australia’s methane emissions

Superpower Institute and Australian Conservation Foundation < 1 mins read

On Wednesday, former ACCC Chair Rod Sims will launch Open Methane, a new open platform for detecting, measuring and locating Australia’s methane emissions.

Open Methane represents a leap forward in the independent verification of emissions and will empower journalists and the community to better scrutinise fossil fuel emissions.

The launch will feature an important update on recent observations of methane emissions.

Methane emissions are believed to account for about 30% of the global temperature rise since the industrial revolution, but the highly potent greenhouse gas is not being well detected or accurately reported in Australia.

The Climate Change Authority’s review of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) scheme found the accuracy of fugitive methane emissions estimates – mostly from coal and gas projects – may be distorted by outdated measuring methods.

Investigative field work by the Australian Conservation Foundation and the global non-profit Clean Air Task Force last year detected climate-heating gas pollution escaping from more than 100 sources at 35 industrial sites in Queensland and NSW.

EPA UPDATE ON SYDNEY BEACHES NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) officers inspected Coogee Beach, Gordons Bay and Maroubra Beaches this morning. Due to the presence of balls at these beaches, EPA officers are also inspecting neighbouring beaches as ocean movements could push balls to other beaches. Balls have now been observed in debris on Bondi, Bronte, Clovelly, Congong, Frenchmans, Little Bay, Malabar and Tamarama beaches. The EPA is supporting Randwick City Council with its clean-up of Coogee Beach and Gordons Bay and has offered support to Waverley Council.
