WALL OF LOVE REMEMBRANCE GARDEN LAUNCHED TO CELEBRATE DAVID POLSON’S 70TH BIRTHDAY

Qtopia Sydney 2 mins read

Qtopia Sydney is proud to announce the launch of the Wall of Love Remembrance Garden in honour of Emeritus Founding Chair David Polson AM’s 70th birthday on 23 November 2024 and his enduring legacy of advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community.

The garden will be home to the Wall of Love, featuring engraved stainless steel plaques that pay tribute to loved ones, honour community champions, remember those lost to HIV/AIDS or celebrate contribution to the Queer community. This reflective space invites visitors to pause and remember.

This initiative not only stands as a lasting tribute to these individuals but also embodies Qtopia Sydney’s commitment to preserving and sharing the lived experiences that have shaped, and continue to shape, the LGBTQIA+ community.

True to David's selflessness, his only wish for this milestone birthday was to create a space for others to remember the people they love in a community-focused environment.

The engraved plaques available at $1,000 each, will be placed in the Wall of Love Remembrance Garden in the heart of Qtopia Sydney amid its powerful exhibitions. This transformation marks a striking contrast to the site’s original use as an exercise yard for inmates at the former Darlinghurst police station, turning a place of confinement into something beautiful.

Guided by Curatorial Director George Savoulis, the garden area will include lush native plants, a tranquil water feature, decking and seating, creating a peaceful space for reflection, remembrance and celebration. Visitors will be welcomed to enjoy a coffee or drink there as part of their Qtopia Sydney experience.

“David Polson’s impact on how HIV/AIDS is approached in Australia continues to resonate today. This project offers a unique way for our community to honour those we’ve lost and celebrate the lives that have made a difference,” said Greg Fisher, Qtopia Sydney’s Chief Executive Officer.

“We’re excited to see how this project evolves, and the heartfelt tributes that it will inspire. This is more than just plaques – it’s about building a space for reflection, celebration and community resilience,” concluded Mr Fisher.

As Qtopia Sydney prepares to celebrate David Polson’s legacy, we invite everyone to join this meaningful project. By purchasing a plaque or supporting the initiative in other ways, you can contribute to a lasting tribute that honours the past and present. This space will intertwine stories of love, courage and loss, ensuring the legacy of the LGBTQIA+ community is celebrated, remembered and protected for generations to come.
