APOLA Commends Bondi Lifeguards for Heroic Response Following Bondi Beach Attack

THE AUSTRALIAN POOLS & OCEAN LIFEGUARD ASSOCIATION (APOLA) 2 mins read

Sydney, Australia — Wednesday, 17 December 2025 — The Australian Pool & Ocean Lifeguards Association (APOLA) has today formally commended the Bondi Lifeguards for their courageous, calm, and decisive actions in the immediate aftermath of the violent attack at Bondi Beach.

In an incident that has shaken the local community and the nation, Bondi Lifeguards were among the first responders on scene, acting instinctively and selflessly to assist injured members of the public, secure the area, and support emergency services during an unfolding and highly volatile situation.

APOLA Secretary John Andrews said the actions of the Bondi team exemplified the very best of professional lifesaving efforts.

The Bondi Lifeguards demonstrated extraordinary bravery and professionalism under unimaginable circumstances. Their ability to switch instantly from water safety to emergency response, while placing themselves in harm’s way to help others, reflects the depth of their training and their unwavering commitment to public safety.”

Eyewitness accounts confirm lifeguards immediately rendered first aid, coordinated crowd management, reassured distressed beachgoers, and worked alongside NSW Police, NSW Ambulance, and other emergency personnel during the critical early stages of the response.

While lifeguards are best known for preventing drownings and rescues in the surf, APOLA emphasised that modern professional lifeguards are trained to respond to a wide range of emergencies — including mass casualty incidents — and the Bondi response underscores the vital role they play in keeping Australia’s beaches safe.

This was not just an act of duty — it was an act of humanity,” APOLA President Bruce Hopkins added. “In moments of chaos and fear, the lifeguards on duty stood as capable leaders. APOLA is incredibly proud of them.”

The lifeguard team on duty were Daniel McLaughlin, Michael Jenkinson, Troy Quinlan, Mario Marfella, Rory Davey, Jackson Doolan, Trent Maxwell, Trent Falson, Frankie Desrets, Eddy Hudson, Lindsay Lawry, Wally Eggleton, Tommy Woodriff, and Lukas Street-Wong.

APOLA also acknowledges the broader emergency services, beach management teams and community members who assisted on the day and extends its deepest sympathies to those affected by the attack.
