The higher education sector is positioning itself to be a leader in addressing gender-based violence.
The peak body for the sector, in industrial relations, the Australian Higher Education Industrial Association (AHEIA) has been invited by the Gender Based Violence Directorate to have input into implementation of the Gender Based Violence Code (Code).
“The sector regards this is a highly important matter and is involved in a range of initiatives to improve knowledge and responses to gender-based violence (GBV),” the Executive Director of AHEIA, Craig Laughton, said.
AHEIA has produced a GBV guide for its 34 university members that will provide practical support for the implementation and ongoing operation of the Code across the sector.
Most recently the association presented a GBV roadmap to almost 150 senior members of staff at universities. It also is conducting a survey on the issue to learn more about preparedness to manage GBV matters.
“It is important higher education institutions understand what constitutes a gender based violence issue and deals with the matter sensitively and appropriately,” Mr Laughton said.
“There are bound to be some teething problems, however the sector is developing an understanding that errs on the side of conservatism, thoughtfulness and consideration so that those involved in a complaint are treated appropriately.”
The approach is another example of the university sector being an exemplary employer.
