The Australian Institute of Architects, the peak body for Australian architecture, noted the Federal Government’s announcement on AI today and in particular welcomed the greater national coordinated focus on the building of data centres.
“Data centres have major impacts on energy networks, water supplies and surrounding communities,” said the Institute’s National President, David Wagner FRAIA.
“So they need strategic planning from day one.”
“If we get the planning right now, data centres can support economic growth while balancing the needs of communities, infrastructure and the environment.
“We welcome the Federal Government’s acknowledgement today that this needs a solid strategic framework and national coordination, and we look forward to working with the new Office of AI to provide advice as experts on the built environment.
“Data centres are more than just buildings. They’re integrated infrastructure systems that need coordinated planning across energy, water and land use.
“The fastest-growing part of the digital economy should also be helping drive the clean energy transition. Data centres should be designed to minimise emissions, maximise efficiency and support renewable energy integration.
“Australia's architects are uniquely placed to help solve these challenges because we work at the intersection of infrastructure, energy, planning, sustainability and community outcomes.”
