Reclaim your kitchen: Appliances Online’s clever choices for more space

Appliances Online 3 mins read

For many Australians, especially those in apartments, a compact kitchen is a reality. Appliances Online reveals a range of clever appliance choices that can transform limited kitchen spaces, enhancing functionality without the need for costly renovations.

According to Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2021 Census data, higher-density living is on the rise, with apartments accounting for nearly 31 per cent of the increase in private dwellings since 2016. Over 2.5 million Australians now live in apartments, making compact kitchens commonplace. Appliances Online says choosing multi-functional, integrated and space-conscious appliances can help make smaller kitchens feel more spacious and easier to cook in - without the need for a major renovation.

Three clever appliance choices for smaller kitchens:

1. Choose a combination oven instead of multiple countertop appliances

Combination microwave ovens combine microwave and conventional oven functions, with many models also featuring air-fry mode. By combining functions, you can remove the need for several standalone appliances and free up valuable countertop space.

Appliances Online product expert Colin Jones says: “By choosing a combo oven that can do several things, such as being a microwave, air fryer and oven all in one, you can really save space. Some models can combine the speed of microwave cooking with the browning of a normal oven to reduce overall cooking time as well.”

2. Choose a slimline or single drawer dishwasher rather than a full-size one

A 45cm slimline dishwasher is a practical solution where a conventional 60cm model won't fit. Single-drawer dishwashers also suit smaller households, and can make loading and unloading much easier by removing the need to bend down to floor-level.

3. Choose discreet ventilation instead of bulky, protruding rangehoods

Traditional canopy rangehoods can dominate a compact kitchen. Undermount and slideout rangehoods sit neatly within the confines of cabinetry, and integrated downdraft cooktops draw steam downwards, eliminating the need for a prominent overhead canopy. Depending on the installation, downdraft systems may also be ducted outside or use recirculation where external ducting isn't practical.

Colin says the key is matching the ventilation solution to the size and layout of the kitchen.

“Smaller undermount rangehoods easily handle steam in compact spaces,” he says. “For downdraft models, you must consider the components underneath, as they take up cabinetry space and won't fit if an oven sits directly below.”

In addition to choosing space-saving appliances, a few simple design choices can reduce friction points and give smaller kitchens a lighter, more open feel. Fridges, ovens and cabinetry with recessed rather than protruding handles, pull-out pantries and lazy Susan corner cupboards, lighter-coloured cabinetry and glossy tiles, and under-cupboard lighting can be simple and surprisingly effective ways to achieve a brighter and less-cluttered space.

With the right combination of appliances, storage, and design choices, even the smallest kitchen can become a more functional and enjoyable space to cook in.
